What would you get if you crossed an ashram with an elementary school? We are living it.

Thanksgiving Report

My mom and dad always do the greatest Turkey Day fest. We always have exactly the same thing at just about the same time. It's a ritual. Part of the ritual is inviting new people though, so this year I got to meet some of my mothers new friends from Socorro. There are intelligent women living in Socorro County!!!! It was so nice to be around this group that it almost makes me want to move south. If my mother ever invites you to attend Thanksgiving, well.... you are foolish to turn down the opportunity to indulge in a ritual feasting of extraordinary quality.

When John and I got back to Navajo City, my mother called to tell me that my Aunt had suffered a brain aneurysm and it is looking like she is in an irreversible coma. We have seen her go to the point of no-return and then come back to live another 10 years, so I am not ready to give up hope. I think my Aunt was one of those people who really tried to live a virtuous life and she will have accumulated some good karma in this incarnation. She was certainly a positive influence in my childhood. This is the second time my cousins have had to wrestle with withholding life support. Last time they agreed, but my Aunt just recovered anyway. This time, I suspect there was less argument. I am hoping that they find their way though this part of the journey with peace and unity in their hearts.

John and I installed a new woodstove in the guest wing today. I had been pricing stovepipe in Bloomfield and on the Internet. I couldn't find a way to get below about $600 for the chimney kit and stove pipes. When we went through Belen, we stopped at the hardware store to check.... $240 got us everything we needed. Now there is a small wood stove near the thick adobe wall that Donna helped me build. I think the mass of the adobe will help hold some of the heat. This week we will be moving couches in (yes, BearClaw is loosing his video nest).

So much for now,

Yes it was a GREAT Thanksgiving, nice and relaxed.
I had a great time, it was good to see you and John, even though you do not mention that I was there (sniff, sniff) LOL.
Hope the new woodstove keeps you warmer this winter.

A new wood stove in the hostel wing??? I remember one from several years ago, Canadian-made, wasn't it? Expect this new one will be more effective with the chimney through the atrium. Sounds exciting. How many in this hunting party?

Actually, the new wood stove is the old wood stove from Navajo City. It was replaced with a gas heater since the waitresses were really bad about keeping it full of wood and the stove hood fan in the kitchen sucks so hard that the smoke would come back down the chimney pipe and into the dining room.

It might be warm, and it might not. Can't say, but tonight it is supposed to get down to zero°F so we will have an opportunity to test it.
