Five Years of Wandering Chaco
Donna and I spent a couple of days back on the Chaco project. This time we were looking at the major outliers on Park Service land. There is one of these ancient ruins on the outskirts of Crownpoint, one adjacent to the village of Pueblo Pintado, and one in a quiet canyon near Lake Valley, NM. Unlike our normal camping expeditions to the Chaco headquarters, we commuted to our projects, which meant hours and hours behind the wheel. It was painful to drive so much! But it is a spectacular verdant year on the NW part of the Navajo Nation and our days were picture perfect.
This is the fifth year of the contract and it's time for me to put in my final report. I hope I can find some other excuse to roam the Chaco backcountry when the urge to roam overtakes me.

Yes it is always good to have an excuse to explore Chaco country. I just took 20 Elderhostel participants to Chaco this week - and to Pueblo Pintado. They ranged in age from 60 to late 70s and all made the hike up to Pueblo Alto. It was beautiful and the wildflowers this year are most spectacular.
