My personal philosphy about why a martial art like Tukong Moosul is needed in the 21st century.
As societies across the world evolve there has remained a need for highly trained personnel to be able to react to any threat to that society. In the 21st century the chances of being attacked by someone wielding a sword or nun chucks is remote. Yet the chances of being attacked by someone carrying a knife, or a handgun is higher. Depending on where you live, that might be considered a probability rather than a possibility.
TUKONG MOOSUL was specifically developed to allow the soldier of the Special Forces survive and win in hand-to-hand conflicts. This modern-day-warrior training incorporates the best of realistic hand-to-hand martial training, with the time-tested ethic's, etiquette and philosophy of traditional martial arts.
For the majority of people I know and train with, it is not the physical aspect of the training that is the prime motivator. Sure at first it is important, but I am now talking about after you have been training for years and years. There is a time and instance when one realizes that the motivation is not based on being able to kick harder or faster. The primary motivation now has internalized and is more about the inner discipline than the outer aspects of the training. Yet when you do train you find that you push yourself harder than ever before. But it is an internal opponent one is grappling with.
Can I be so brave and or foolish to offer an opinion on that grapple? I have had to grapple with my own 'shadow' (read my women's self defense page for more info) and I can tell you that YOU CANNOT DEFEAT YOUR SHADOW. The best strategy is to enter into a harmonious relationship with your shadow. The shadow is there as a teacher and a tool. It only gets out of control when you try to supress it. Like trying to put a fire hose against a wall in order to keep the water from coming out. It just comes out sideways. It is a lot wiser to point the hose in a direction that will do the least harm and then learn to work with that force.
So why train in the martial arts? Well one side of the coin will tell you that by training you become stronger, and while that is true I will tell you that your shadow also becomes stronger. Just like a shadow in 'the real world.' If there is a little light the shadow is not as prominent. But if there is a lot of light, the shadow is very pronounced. But with care, caution, and consideration you can work with this. Just like a good painter works with light and shadow in his/her art each of us can work with using the shadow to project the light & sound, so that we can learn from that. What is covered by the shadow is not 'bad' that is just a construct of the mind. A judgement.
This is where, in my biased opinion, traditional martial arts excells. By keeping the etiquette, discipline and structure intact we learn how to control our shadow. Maybe not at first, and definately not consciously, but in time it does integrate into our consciousness. Then the grapple I reffered to earlier has become internal. And the stage is set for amazing growth, evolution, and compassion.
Traditional Martial Arts trainingteaches the student how to face and overcome the challenges of life, how to interact with respect, dignity and honor. Traditional Martial Art training is a way to learn how to access the higher Spiritual aspects of the human experience. Though depending on your instructor that may never happen. If your instructor is walking a path of peace, just by being in her or his presence you will begin to transform. If your instructor is aware of and able to transmit part of the knowledge he or she has gained along the way you will be able to avoid some of the pitfalls that are on every trail. That type of training is rare, but it definately does exist. SEARCH FOR THAT. Do not just accept anything less. Every erg of energy you put into that search will be returned ten fold in your training experiences.
A realistic, comprehensive martial art in todays society is going to have to teach it's students how to deal effectively with weapons attacks, as well as multiple attackers.
TUKONG MOOSUL is a fighting system that is both complex and comprehensive. It teaches a fighting system that incorporates both linear and circular techniques, weapons training, weapons-defense training, vital-point-grappling, and stategies to defend against multiple assailants.
I still believe that the stonger purpose of traditional martial arts training is to teach us to grapple with and enter into a healthy relationhip with our shadow.
This complex martial art is available in only a few cities in the United States. Each of the instructors has developed their own personal area's of expertise, though there is a very strong uniformity among the WTKMS instructors.
